FRIENDLY REMINDER that yes you can ship this all you want (although i personally could never ever do that,) but queer people are allowed to speak about the erasure whenever they want. do not ever shut queer people down when they want to discuss it. recognize that it is problematic, its not that hard. you can like things that are problematic, cmon i like homestuck. even if you are queer or LGBT+ yourself, know that some people are very uncomfortable with these ships as they are in fact queer erasure. and they are allowed to be uncomfortable and speak about it!!!! because dirk strider is gay!!!! and dont try to ever tell me that he could be bi/pan bc that excuse gets v tiring when people only want characters to share my sexuality when theyre hungry 4 hetero!!! thank u for your time.
hey, i’m a dirkroxy shipper! i completely agree that dirk’s gay - that one quote about “respective sexualities” confirmed it for me. and there’s other canon evidence but i can’t remember the exact details. the point is that he’s not bi, he’s not pan - he’s gay. we agree on that.
and (as you said) representation of lots of groups in media is a big problem!! when PoCs, LGBT+s, etc are represented, they’re often presented as caricatures. their characters lack depth and personality. they’re token. so what i really like about homestuck is that we have these characters who aren’t all straight - and rose and dirk are great examples of significant, complex characters. hussie’s presentation of race in the comic still leaves a lot to be desired, but that’s another issue.
i don’t use the bi/pan excuse. and, given recent developments in which the relationship of dirk and roxy was explicitly outlined, i would never want him to reciprocate her feelings in canon. he said it best: he has to stay true to himself, and him entering a canon relationship with her would be erasure in my view. besides, her behaviour towards him was coercive. even if he was attracted to women, her persistence - both in flirting with him to the point that he was uncomfortable and trying to kiss him in his vulnerable (possibly depressed??) state - was absolutely not acceptable.
posts like yours need to be made. we need to talk about how homestuck is problematic at times, we do need to remind ourselves to think critically and not just accept everything hussie does. this discussion does need to take place, and it needs to be initiated by people like yourself, who don’t identify as hetero. i’m straight, so i recognise that it isn’t always my place to speak on issues such as these.
the point is, i don’t feel that shipping dirk with female characters has to be erasure?? we do have to recognise a character’s sexuality for what it is, and not make excuses to erase it. i see many problematic interpretations of dirkroxy and similar ships, which ignore canon and use flimsy evidence to ignore that dirk is gay, and those are indeed a big problem. but shipping is not canon. shipping takes place within the imagination. i feel that it’s fully possible to have hetero ships while being completely honest about characters’ canon identities, so i don’t really agree that it has to always be inherently problematic/erasing???
though i have disagreed with you on a few fundamental points, i want to thank you for making this post - you said some things that need to be said and repeated.
